I read in today's Honduran newspaper that Daniel Ortega, president of Nicaragua - and pocket buddy of Bolivian president Hugo Chavez - has succeeded in the first step toward securing the possibility of re-election. Although the Constitution forbids it, the Constitutional Court has decided that the article that forbides a president to re-run in un-applicable. The judges went so far as to say that they are the mouth of the law and therefore ordered the Supreme Electoral Council to permit Ortega to run again, should he so chose.
HELLO!! If what just happened in Honduras is not an indication of how people are really feeling. The court and people of Honduras put a stop to their president in his attempt to do the same thing - and the world (wrongfully) labelled it a coup. Now Nicaragua has, at an basic level, opened the door for the same thing to happen again - but it will be dependant on how the majortity of people chose to/chose to not respond.
People need to start paying attention!! Chavez is inflitrating Central America - with strong feeling againsts western thinking. (that may be an understatement). I hope the world wakes up and realizes that what is happening in Nicaragua right now was what Hondurans - as a nation - forbade of their leader - calling him to account to the people.
