In science class today I was teaching some background in the classification of living things. This led to a discussion of Aristotle. I asked my Grade 7 students who Aristotle was. The following were some of the responses:
- "Is that a type of language?"
- "He lives up the hill - out of town!"
- "He is a friend of my grandfather."
- "Didn't he have something to do with gravity?"
I then explained that he was a Greek philosopher. 'What is a philosopher?' I asked.
- "A person who studies philly."
- "Someone who is Greek."
- "What is Greek?"
I laughed. And then explained that in SIMPLE terms philosophy is how we think about thinking.
They did a full mental stop. Hey, I even confused myself.

you're amazing.
That's great! Good storytelling, good story. Brings into relief the mild absurdity that one guy can be so influential to the entire system of thought of much of the world, so much so that not knowing about him or his colleagues means a paradigm shift. (barbie: That's not MY worldview!!!")
haha nice one. :P
