Weekend on the Caribbean...Christmas with no snow

Last weekend the four of us took a much needed quick vacation to Tela - which is a beach on the Caribbean Sea. Here is the things I can't get my head around: we DROVE to the Caribbean for a WEEKEND. Who does that? So all the first set of pictures goes out to all of you waiting out the snow storm.

Tela is not the best beach in Honduras - but it is a beach. It is not safe to walk on at night - there are armed guards walking around all day even - but we enjoyed the water (very warm - not frozen!) and the fresh seafood. I think we will go back - after all it is only like 2.5-3hours away.

Above: the view from the beach right infront of our hotel.
Right: at the ruins of an old Railway Station in Tela.
Honduras just does not have the infrastructure to keep things running or to keep old buildings in use. Many things are lying around (old cars, garbage, etc.) that if people were taught HOW to care for them - then they would still be in use. Many people though do not have the knowledge nor the money to invest in continual upkeep and as a result many things fall quickly into disrepair.
Unlike Guatamala - which makes much more money on tourism than Honduras - there is not much money coming in from other countries. The only 'touristy' place is Utila or Roatan - but those are islands. One could come to Honduras to see these places and not even really SEE Honduras. There is very little money that makes it from Roatan to the mainland.

Finally, some pictures that might be a little more familiar: Christmas. Though we are missing the snow we did have potatoes and other good food along with a Christmas tree (totally a grand height of 27 cm.) We listened to all the songs about snow - but not ever seeing one flake unless it was the fake ones hanging from our ceiling.

MERRY CHRISTMAS from our house to yours.
