Sunday morning at around 5am - soldiers, acting as policemen, arrested Honduran president Mel Zelaya and forced him into exile where he was granted asylum in Costa Rica. As this was taking place, people around the world and Honduras were being told that it was a military coup. And it did have the appearance of that - especially given the fact that the soldiers did the arresting. What did not help the fact was that the president spoke publically and said that he had been kidnapped. What he did not mention was that he had been trying to hold a referendum (in which the only vote was yes) that would allow him to run another term for president - which is in clear violation of the Constitution. Elections were to be held this coming November. Zelaya is not a popular president - passing many laws (such as raising the minium wage) that have not helped the already shaky Honduran economy. His continuing alliance with Venezualan president Hugo Chavez has not helped in solidifying any relationship with the United States, where it is rumoured at least 1/4 of Honduran GNP comes from.
Just be careful about what you read. Many people are interested in turning the events into certain ways to have thing turn in their favor.
